The Samora Machel Heritage Site and Museum is National Heritage Site and memorial depicting the tragic plane crash which killed former President Samora Machel of Mozambique and 33 of his countrymen on the 19th October 1986. It signifies strong bonds of solidarity between South Africa and Mozambican governments and people. The memorial was designed by a Mozambican Architect, Mr. Jose’ Forjaz and inaugurated in January 1999 by the former President Nelson Mandela and the former President of Mozambique Joaquin Chissano. A Museum was also built on site using primarily parts of the wreckage as exhibitions and art works.
...Samora Machel, the Mozambican president and thirty-three others were travelling in the Tupolev TU 134A-3, on their way home following the Lusaka Summit in Zambia. The plane crashed on the Valley of Lebombo Mountains near Mbuzini, close to where the borders of Swaziland, Mozambique and South Africa connect. President Samora Machel and thirty-three of his countrymen died on site and a monument was subsequently built in their honour. There is to date unresolved dispute on the cause of this tragic plane crash in the accident reports conducted by the Apartheid South African Government and the Russian State since the plane and its pilots were Russian.
